When it comes to basic and affordable curling wands, there are two major choices – The Remington Pearl and the Bed Head Tigi which we are going to be looking at today. Both of them have a retail price of under $30, so is the Tigi a better choice? Keep reading to find out more.
Product Features:
The Bed Head line of hair care products are roughly a decade old now, having made their debut on the market in 2003. This range of products was the brainchild of famous UK stylists Toni & Guy, who designed all the products. A few years ago curling wands were introduced to this product range, and the best selling version of this is the Bed Head BH313 Crush which is also otherwise know as the “Curlipops”. The name certainly sounds fun and exciting, but is that enough to warrant a purchase?
Firstly we should mention the fantastic packaging that this wand comes in! It comes in a lollipop shaped package, which is certainly very eye catching and unique. If you saw this package in the shop it would certainly stand out from the competition, so well done to Bed Head for making such a unique and eye catching design.
Now lets have a look at the overall design of the wand. This is not a tapered wand, so it comes in a 1″ diameter. This will allow you to create a range of medium sized curls. There are two different color schemes to choose from including the orange (pictured above) and hot pink. Both varieties look really bright and funky, so choosing between them is a tough choice in our opinion. Being a simplistic model, there aren’t any fancy gimmicks or gadgets on this particular model.
There is no controllable temperature range, and there is a simple on and off switch to operate the wand. The wand operates at a temperature of 400F, which will be enough to curl many different kinds of hair. Pre-heating times are quite competitive, and it shouldn’t take longer than two minutes to be fully heated. A bit of a disadvantage to this wand is the lack of an auto cutoff switch. If you forget to switch the wand off, then this unit will stay on until you remember this! The barrel is made out of ceramic, which is known for providing thorough and even heat distribution. There is a little stand on the other side of the on/off switch so you can safely set the wand down when it is in use without worry about burning anything.
The cord is a standard swivel cord, so no need to worry about catching it on anything. The cord length is more or less standard, although we would have liked to have seen a slightly longer one.
Included with the Tigi wand is a heat resistant glove which makes this wand ideal for beginners. There is no mention of whether or not this model is dual voltage or not. generally when it is not mentioned it means it is not, however this is not a real problem unless you do a lot of international traveling. Now lets have a look at the performance below.
As mentioned earlier the heating times are quite respectable. In our tests the wand was fully heated in under two minutes which is more or less what you can expect for a budget model. When the wand was fully heated, there were no obvious signs of hot or cold spots. The ceramic coating does a decent job of ensuring even heat, and although we had n way of measuring the temperature it was certainly hot enough to curl hair with ease. The wand is quite comfy in your hands and easy to work with as it doesn’t weigh much at all. The 400F temperature provides a high enough temperature to curl the thickest hair in under 10 seconds per strand, and we had no real issues with the operation of this model at all. We tested it a few times over the course of a few days, and we received similar good results each time.
As a economical choice, the Bed Head wand is not a bad choice at all. It is a basic model and lacks many features, but if that doesn’t bother you too much then you should be happy with this. It does compete head to head with the popular Remington Pearl, so you will need to look at the pros and cons between these two models to see which of these sub $30 models will be ideal for you.
